Purchasing Guide for UL Standards & Standards-Related Products and Services

UL's Standards for Safety and Outlines of Investigation contain the requirements used to investigate materials, components, products, and systems for determining the eligibility of the material, component, product, or system to use UL's Listing, Classification, or Recognition Mark, or other UL Mark that may be required.

An electronic version of a UL Published Standard for Safety or Outline of Investigation consists of an electronic Adobe Acrobat PDF™ file containing the complete text of the current version of the UL Published Standard, including all figures, equations, formulas, indexes, supplements, and appendixes.

Any published or adopted revisions that have been issued on or before the date the UL Electronic Standard is shipped are merged into the text of the Standard. UL’s Published Electronic Standards and Outlines of Investigation are intended for on-line use, such as for viewing the requirements of a Standard, conducting a word search, and the like, and for use on a subscriber's own internal Intranet or other internal, in-house system to be accessed internally by the subscriber's staff for use only by the subscriber's staff.

Only one copy of the Standard may be printed from each single-user version of a UL Published Electronic Standard. Only one copy of the Standard may be printed for each authorized user of a multiple-user version UL Published Electronic Standard. An employee of an organization purchasing a UL Published Electronic Standard can make a copy of the page or pages being viewed for their own fair and/or practical internal use. Because of differences in the computer/software/printer setup used by UL and those of Electronic Standards purchasers, the printed copy obtained by a purchaser may not look exactly like the on-screen view or the Hardcopy Published Standard. UL’s Published Electronic Standards are for use with Adobe Acrobat Reader™, or through the use of a Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator™ or Microsoft Internet Explorer™, both with Adobe Acrobat Reader™. The Adobe Acrobat Reader™ is available for downloading at www.adobe.com. UL reserves the right to change the format, presentation, file types and formats, delivery methods and formats, and the like of its Published Electronic Standards without prior notice.

A price code has been assigned to each Published UL Standard for Safety and Outline of Investigation, except for the applicable IEC-Based Standards. The price code and price for each Published Standard and Outline is listed in UL's Catalog of Standards for Safety. Using the "Price Code Matrix," in Table 1, and the corresponding price code specified for a given UL Standard or Outline, the price can be determined for a particular format (hardcopy, single-user electronic) or service (single Standard by itself with no future revisions or proposals.) Prices for IEC-Based Standards are listed in the IEC-Based UL Standards Price List table.

UL’s Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service

The Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service is a customized, yearly service with the fixed annual cost based on the particular Standards involved, and the number of concurrent simultaneous users. As such, the costs maybe different for each subscriber, and will be determined on a case-by-case basis by UL.

The Benefits of Subscribing to UL’s Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service...

• Most subscribers to UL’s three-year Standards Subscription Services have purchased this service for more than one UL Standard for Safety and/or outline of Investigation, resulting in numerous payments and renewals. The Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service is a yearly service that will provide all of a subscribers Standards and/or Outline needs for a year at a fixed annual cost with one single payment.
• If an Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service subscriber needs additional Standards or Outlines during the term of the annual service, they simply notify UL of their needs. If within reason, UL will provide the additional Standards and/or Outlines at no additional cost for the current year. Subscribers will be charged for any additional Standards and/or Outlines that are added throughout the year on the renewal for the next year's service.
• The Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service allows a subscriber active participation in the Standards development process of the UL Standards and Outlines to which they subscribe. The subscriber will be able to review and comment on proposals for new or revised requirements before the requirements are adopted by UL. Upon receipt, a subscriber's comments will be reviewed by UL Standards and Engineering Staff and followed up with a reply. The reply will specify the action taken on the subscriber's comments.
• After Oct. 29, 2004, UL's Collaborative Standards Development System will allow participants in the development process to access proposals and provide comments in an on-line, user-friendly, internet based system accessible 24/7.
• The Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service...keeps the subscriber informed of all the latest, up-to-date requirements that have been adopted for the products covered by the UL Standards and/or Outlines to which they subscribe. As soon as they are issued, the subscriber will receive the complete set of revision pages or adoption bulletins. In addition, if a new edition is published during the term of the subscription, the subscriber will receive the complete new edition.
• An Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service subscription allows the subscriber to participate in the Standards development process of the UL Standards and Outlines to which they subscribe, the subscriber is aware of the need for possible product changes and a possible product review before new and/or revised requirements are adopted, and before UL initiates its own review program to determine compliance with the new or revised requirements.
• When developing new products or when considering changes for existing products, the Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service subscription will give your Engineering and Manufacturing staff access to the latest requirements adopted for the Standards and Outlines used for your products, and access to the changes being proposed for those Standards and Outlines that COULD be adopted in the future.
• If your company’s operations demand that you keep informed about UL’s Standards development activities and the changes in UL’s requirements for the products your company makes or uses, you should subscribe to the Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service for the Standards and Outlines covering these products, so that you will not miss any of the material issued for these Standards and Outlines.

Annual Standards Program/Web Delivery Service...

• Provides electronic files (Adobe Acrobat PDF^™) of UL Published Electronic Standards that are delivered via the Internet.
• Provides the following material during the one-year term of the subscription:
  • All reports of UL/Industry meetings pertaining to the covered Standards and/or Outlines.
  • All new and/or revised requirements issued for the Standards and/or Outlines covered by the service.
  • A new edition, if issued, of the Standards and/or Outlines covered by the service.
  • National differences document, as applicable, for the Standards covered by the service, not including the 60065 or 60950 series.
  • Access to UL's Collaborative Standards Development System to review proposals and provide comments on the covered Standards and/or Outlines.

The national differences document is updated when the Standard is revised. National differences are not available for the 60065 or 60950 series.

UL Collaborative Standards Development System is an on-line, user-friendly, internet-based system that allows anyone involved in the standards development process 24/7 access to proposals, comments, votes and other information related to the development acceptance of UL Standards for Safety. Standards Technical Panel

The Standards Technical Panels (STPs) are an important part of the process by which UL develops and maintains its Standards for Safety.

An STP is a group of individuals, representing a variety of interests, formed to review proposals related to UL Standards for Safety. When an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/UL Standard for Safety is involved, an STP serves as the consensus body to review and vote on proposals prior to publication.

UL Standards are recognized nationally and internationally as the benchmarks for product safety. The Standards Technical Panels (STPs) provide UL with the means to receive early input from those who are interested in the standards development process.

Technical Report No. 34		Reactions of Aluminum and Magnesium with Certain Chlorinated Hydrocarbons - Field reports have attributed fires and explosions to the reaction of aluminum with carbon tetrachloride or methyl chloride. Theoretical considerations support the possibility of such occurrences and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. has made an investigation to provide test data on the fire and explosion hazards. Tests under various conditions were conducted using magnesium powder or aluminum exposed in contact with carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloride, trichloroethylene, dichlorodifluoromethane, or carbon tetrachloride-chloroform mixtures. The object of the investigation was to obtain information relative to the fire and explosion hazards which may result from the contact of aluminum or magnesium with certain chlorinated hydrocarbons. This reactivity was investigated and described in this technical report.
Technical Report No. 56		Study of Smoke Ratings Developed in Standard Fire Tests in Relation to Visual Observations - The object of this investigation was to study the effect of smoke development from a material having a specific smoke rating on the visibility in a room in which the smoke was collected. This object took into account the following relationships: a) the relationship between visual observation and the numerical scales of density associated with measurement of smoke; b) the relationship between the time at which certain degrees of obscuration occur in a room and the rate and density of smoke produced by various building materials when exposed to reproducible and similar ignition and burning conditions; c) the relationship between smoke production in the burning of a given material and the velocity of the air supplied for combustion across the material surface; and d) the relationship between smoke density produced in a given test room and the degree of ventilation provided in the room.
Technical Report No. 58		An Investigation of Flammable Gases or Vapors With Respect to Explosion-Proof Electrical Equipment - This is a report of the initial investigation conducted by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. to establish a procedure for classifying additional flammable gases or vapors within Groups A, B, C, and D of Class I hazardous locations as defined by the National Electrical Code. This procedure provides a means of increasing the utility of presently recognized explosion-proof electrical equipment without the necessity of additional expensive and laborious testing of such equipment.

UL Standards Sets consist of similar Standards for Safety and/or Outlines of Investigation sold and distributed as a package. The Standards and/or Outlines in a set generally cover one or a group of similar components, products, or systems; and are often used together, in whole or in part, during the investigation of these components, products, or systems. There are no discounts available for Standards Sets because the price schedule for these sets already includes a cost reduction for quantity purchases.
