UL Standards for Safety

National Electrical Code (NEC) Changes & Proposals to the STP

The 2005 NEC contains numerous changes from the previous edition of the NEC that have a relationship to requirements contained in UL Standards for Safety. UL has reviewed the changes in the NEC, and will develop proposals for the revision of various standards to send to UL's Standards Technical Panels (STP) to address these code changes. Although many changes in UL Standards are precipitated by changes in codes, please note that a code change alone is not a rationale for a proposal to change a UL Standard.

UL has divided the Code changes into two lists as follows:

List A = Code changes that, in UL's opinion, necessitate a revision to one or more UL Standards and for which UL expects to submit a proposal to the UL STP responsible for that Standard(s).

List B = Code changes, that in UL's opinion, do not necessitate a revision to any UL Standards and for which UL does not expect to submit a proposal to the UL STP responsible for that Standard.

2005 NEC Changes

If after reviewing List B, the reader thinks that a change to one or more UL Standard(s) is necessary, please feel free to submit a proposal to the appropriate STP. Proposals should be submitted via UL's Collaborative Standards Development System (UL CSDS). A copy of the appropriate standard can be purchased on-line from Comm-2000.

If, after reviewing List A and B, the reader thinks that a Code change(s) has been overlooked by UL, and in particular, one that in the reader's opinion necessitates a revision to one or more UL Standard(s), we would appreciate your bringing this to our attention.
