1 Scope

1.1 These requirements cover combustion heating appliances such as burners, boilers, and the like that are intended for operation firing liquid methanol as an alternate main fuel source. These devices are intended for use only in commercial and industrial (i.e., non-residential) occupancies.

1.2 The heating appliance shall be suitable for installation in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association Standards for Installation of Oil Burning Equipment, NFPA 31, the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, and/or other criteria deemed necessary by the authority having jurisdiction.

1.3 The burner of an appliance intended for operation firing liquid methanol shall comply with the applicable requirements in the Standard for Oil Burners, UL 296, the Standard for Oil-Fired Boiler Assemblies, UL 726 and the Standard for Commercial-Industrial Gas Heating Equipment, UL 795, in addition to the requirements in this Outline.

1.4 The device shall comply with the applicable UL Standard for the type of heating appliance, in addition to the requirements in this Outline. For example, an oil-fired boiler assembly shall also comply with the requirements of the Standard for Oil-Fired Boiler Assemblies, UL 726.

1.5 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this Outline of Investigation, and that involve a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the acceptable level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this Outline of Investigation. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this Outline of Investigation cannot be judged to comply with this Outline of Investigation. Where considered appropriate, revisions of requirements may be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this Outline of Investigation.
