OIL/WATER SEPARATORS

1 Scope

1.1 These requirements cover stationary gravity or pump fed aboveground and underground, atmospheric type oil/water separator systems intended to remove oil, having a specific gravity of 0.83 - 0.94 at 15°C (59°F), suspended in water from rainwater runoff or normal washdown of streets, highways, and parking lots at an inlet rate not exceeding the marked maximum influent concentration and flow rate.

1.2 These requirements cover gravity or pump fed oil/water separator systems having capacities of 60 to 50,000 gallons (227 - 189,270 L) total.

1.3 Oil/water separators are intended for installation and use in accordance with the Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, NFPA 30; the Automotive and Marine Service Station Code, NFPA 30A; and the Standard for the Installation of Oil-Burning Equipment, NFPA 31, or other National or State codes for Oil/Water Separation equipment installation and use.

1.4 Oil/water separator systems covered by these requirements are fabricated, inspected, and tested for leakage before shipment from the factory as completely assembled units, or with instructions for field assembly of minor components.

1.5 These requirements do not cover oil that has been physically emulsified (other than by a feed pump), chemically emulsified or dissolved.

1.6 These requirements do not cover liquid level devices, overpressure devices, heaters, pumps, monitors, shutoff valves, or other individual mechanical or electrical components which are not an integral part of, or are recommended for use with, the oil/water separator system. The requirements for these devices are covered under separate standards as referenced in Appendix a.

1.7 These requirements do not cover oil/water separator systems intended for collection or washdown of large concentrated spills from tankers or other bulk carriers.

1.8 These requirements do not cover oil/water separator systems intended to be installed in mobile vehicles or vessels.

1.9 These requirements do not cover oil/water separator systems for installation in hazardous chemical locations, or for use with hazardous chemicals.

1.10 These requirements do not cover oil/water separator systems for use with oil outside the range of 0 - 35°C (32 - 95°F).

1.11 These requirements do not cover oil/water separator systems for marine use, or washdown with salt water, as covered under the Standard for Oily Water Separating Equipment and Oil Content Meters - UL 1504.

1.12 These requirements do not cover the ability of the oil/water separator systems to perform or operate with debris or suspended solids in the oil/water mixture.

1.13 The term "separator" as used in this Outline refers to the complete oil/water separating systems, or any part thereof covered by this Outline unless specifically noted otherwise.

1.14 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this Outline of Investigation, and that involves a risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury to persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the acceptable level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this Outline of Investigation. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this Outline of Investigation cannot be judged to comply with this Outline of Investigation. Where considered appropriate, revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this Outline of Investigation.
