UL Standard for Safety for X-Ray Equipment

UL 187

Scope

These requirements cover X-ray equipment for medical, commercial, and industrial use to be employed in accordance with the National Electrical Code.

These requirements cover enclosed equipment intended for connection to supply circuits of 600 V or less, including controls, high-voltage transformers, tube units, and similarly related components such as foot switches, bucky diaphragms, tables, tube stands, tube-head cooling units, tube protectors, stereo-shifters, cassette changers, spot-film devices, camera stands, photo-tube detectors, timers, and the like, which are directly concerned with the generation and application of X-radiation. X-ray equipment intended for use in a hazardous location is investigated under these requirements and, in addition, is investigated with respect to its acceptability for the particular application.

These requirements do not cover allied apparatus such as film viewers and similar accessories, which are covered by other applicable requirements. These requirements do not cover equipment in which the radiation is obtained from radioactive isotopes.

Except for equipment not used for medical or dental diagnosis or treatment - such as cabinet equipment, baggage inspection systems and the like - these requirements do not contemplate the investigation of protection against X-radiation except as noted in .

A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of fire or of electric shock or injury to persons shall be evaluated using appropriate additional component and end-product requirements to maintain the level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this standard does not comply with this standard. Revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard.
